Post-Graduation Blues

I kind of figured I wouldn't have a job before Christmas, and now with 2010 almost over, I'm starting to get antsy.

I keep getting things in the mail from my student loan company, further depressing me and making me wonder how I will pay it all back. I have till March to find a job, but I'd prefer to have something by Valentines Day - the sooner the better. If I can't find a job in my field by then I'll be forced to do retail or fast food to just pay on at least one student loan so we don't deplete all the money we have.

I apply for at least five jobs a day, sometimes ten on a good day. Mailing, emailing and faxing applications, resumes and cover letters consumes the first two hours of my morning every day. I haven't had a single interview and I've been applying since November 1st. Its really starting to wear on me. I know that I'm qualified for at least 90% of the jobs I apply for and no one will give me the time of day. I sometimes get rejection emails within a half an hour of applying - there is NO way they read my resume and application that quickly.

I've networked some, but there are at least 10 people that won't return my emails, phone calls or linked-in messages about wanting to get together. I know this is a busy time of year, but some response would be nice.

I just feel like I'm running out of ideas and every time I look at my diploma it makes me more and more depressed....I'm totally open to suggestions not just about job hunting but also about how to get my mood in a better place!

I know how you feel. I sent out about 100 resumes one month and got literally zero response, not even rejection letters.

You've just got to focus on what you can do that makes you happy. I've been trying to monetize my talents when looking for a regular job frustrates me. Granted, that hasn't worked out either, but it's a nice change of pace from emailing resumes.

Have you tried going through a temp agency? I don't know if that would help or even be applicable to your situation, but that's how I got into my current job. I was a temp for 3 months and then they hired me "for real". it just helped get me in the door.

stay positive! it's tough out there right now... so you're not the only one. i'm sure something will come about soon!

ohh sweetie, I know how you feel. I moved to Athens a month after graduating, and pretty much cried every day for two straight months because there was just nothing - no job opps. I tried so so hard, and finally, hopped over to the temp agency in town. they had job openings posted that were full time permanent, too - thankfully, i was contacted by one of those, and things worked out perfectly! I'm still working at the same place five years later, and couldn't be happier (well, i'm lying - i'd like to have more $$, but who wouldn't?) hang in there. I promise you, it'll work out. And when you least expect it, too. (So stop looking at that phone, hoping it'll ring!)

May you be blessed in 2011! :)

well i happen to be one of those people who quit a high paying job almost a year ago when it felt that if i didn't quit then I'm probably going to kill myself coz i hated it so much...so yeah in this bad economy, this was pretty suicidal...I can understand the frustration you must be feeling right now..but instead of focusing on the lack of offers, think abt what if you were stuck in a job that would make you want to kill urself??..I am sure you wouldn't want that..so keep ur faith and hope that things would turn out for the best..
In the mean time, do visit a temp agency and u just might find something good there..also sometimes, there are some seemingly low profile jobs available which might not be heavily publicized but can still help u make decent money..like a friend of mine who was facing a similar situation like urs, answered an ad on craigslist for a personal assistant to a writer, she didn't want to apply at first but ended up taking that job which did pay enough for her to live comfortably until she found a job that she really wanted a few months later..another unemployed frnd answered ads to give out private tuition to students in his area and this worked out so well for him that he is now running a very successful business of providing the services of private tutors through his company...
so do look for opportunities like this, u just might find something that works for u, even for a short while.. try to find something according to ur interests if not ur education..best of luck and a happy new year.. :)
